Jonathan Creek on BBC1 is a crime drama with a strong brush of comedy starring Alan Davies in the title role. Jonathon Creek is a consultant to Adam Klaus a well-known stage magician. Creek’s ability to create illusions that create an almost supernatural stage magic allows him to also solve crimes that seem impossible. However, Jonathan is often reluctant to get involved and has to be coerced into offering his services.
Each week Creek gets involved in investigating a seemingly impossible crime and the story revolves around his detective work rather than the usual crime drama action
Throughout the series, there is a nod towards the popular Sherlock series starring Benedict Cumberbatch and this provides a running gag both through comedic turns in the story and the characters involved.
Jonathan Creek always has a female companion to help him. In the latest series, Jonathan Creek now a happily married man, is helped by his wife. Originally it was Maddy Magellan, a pushy investigative journalist played by Caroline Quentin who was later replaced by Carla played by Julia Sawalha as a TV host presenting a show similar to Crime Watch. In the last series Jonathan’s new wife Polly, played by Sarah Alexander takes on the assistant’s role.
It should come as no surprise that although Alan Davies is getting older, his female assistants get replaced once they reach a certain age!
Jonathon Creek on BBC1 has run since 1997 and is currently in its 5th season. The show’s popularity is partly due to its large cast of comic actors who play supporting roles.
